Why I Don’t Care if Teens Aren’t Using Twitter (and Why You Shouldn’t Care, Either)

91C4475B-9569-4109-A627-5E6D3F712457.jpgSo the news is out that teens aren’t using Twitter all that much.

Gasp.

Oh, no.

All this new-fangled social media stuff is supposed to be for the youngins, right? There must be glitch in the Matrix, or something, if the kool kidz aren’t using Twitter.

The average age on Twitter? Turns out to be 45 – 54. So, is there something wrong here? Not at all. Twitter has greater rewards for a more mature and societally-oriented mind. Teens are socially oriented, sure, but they’re not societally oriented. They’re only focused on their limited peer group.

Why should they tweet when they’re already texting the only people they care to talk to, anyway?

Teens aren’t trying to build, reach, and influence an audience. Teens aren’t “networking.” Teens aren’t running and marketing a business (well, most of ‘em, anyway). They don’t need twitter.

And Twitter doesn’t need teens.

But if you’re running a business and you want to market it, the fact that Twitter has more adults than teens is a very, very good thing.

Why’s that?

Because adults have MONEY, and teens don’t.

Adults are your customers and clients, not teens. Teens don’t need a blog consultant. Teens don’t need a graphic designer or a “social media expert.” They don’t need a life coach or a software developer or any of the other professions on Twitter getting connections and getting hooked up with opportunities. That’s the kind of stuff adults need, and Twitter has it in spades.

Teens are not likely your customers, so who cares if they’re on Twitter or not? If you’re in business, you want to be where your customers are, period. Increasingly, that means you need to be on Twitter.

Are you CRAZY. Twitter matters for everyone. Maybe not now or not in a year from now, but at some point it will.

Have you seen Mashables report?

OK, I'm being a bit dramatic, but I think Twitter matters or will matter at some point so everyone should care (levels of caring may differ, but not paying any attention at all is unwise if you are doing business on the social web).

Now, if you are a company selling dishwashers through Sears you may not care at all. I get that. But if you're paying attention to TrustAgents they you also are trying to figure out how the human/social web can be used for your business because just selling your dishwashers through Sears may not be enough in 5 yrs.

Thanks for pointing out the distinction between reaching "cool kidz" and reaching "customers." Only the latter matters!

Not everyone out there is a potential customer. Not even close. Only those who are specifically targeting teens (and expecting Twitter to reach them just because they're online a lot) should be dismayed at this news.

I'm not targeting teens, so I'll continue happily using Twitter. Rock on!

Good points Michael. Most adults concentrate on sharing experiences - good and bad - that may have come from a series of events.

It seems to me that teens seem to concentrate on incidents - more singular events and their reaction to them.

Teens are using twitter! (At least in my area) and they are annoying! Because they arenu00e2u0080u0099t trying to build, reach, and influence an audience. They only tweet the stuff they are doing (usually via text) they don't care about reading anyone elseu00e2u0080u0099s content, engaging in meaningful conversation or add any value. No links, no Re-Tweets just status updates. As a business owner I follow all the locals and yes I followed a few teens and twenty somethingu00e2u0080u0099s but usually end up un-following them once I see their useless information. So, yes Twitter doesnu00e2u0080u0099t need teens! And I hope more do not sign up! (Until they grow-up and realize the world doesn't revolve around them or cares 'What they are doing')
