People…Have you ever noticed…

Have you ever noticed it is those who can’t who want to tell you how you should…

For whatever reason, this just stuck in my brain the other night.

If you have visit my own blog here at Blog For Profit lately, you will notice my postings have been almost nonexistent. Hell, I haven’t posted much at all.

I had the best of intentions to get my butt back in gear early this summer and get back on a regular schedule of postings.

However, as it happens, life jumped up and bit me in the ass.  You see on June 8th, 2011 my father of 50 years died suddenly.  Dad was young too, only 69.  Damn young when you are fast approaching 51 yourself.

Why am I telling you this?  To be very frank, and no I would not want to be Frank, and that is a whole other story.  I have not had the desire nor the drive to write much of anything the last couple of months.

Until, the very first sentence of this post hit me in the forehead,  I was kind of lost in what to even write.

A book?

Someone told me a few months ago  I needed to write a book.  A book about how we, my son Clay and I,  built a WordPress theme company from the ground up with no outside investors and on a shoe string budget.

A company built by a father and son team.  A son who is just freaking amazing too. A son who was barely 16 when he wrote the first line of code for this company called Headway Themes.

A company who has not gone a single day without making money since the first day we launched on July 31st, 2009.  Needless to say, we have a great community of Headway users. And an amazing Team working with us here at Headway.

This story has as much to do about blogging and social media as anything.  So, to that end, starting in the next few days, I am going to start to write this “book” on my blog here at Blog For Profit.  While it might seem a bit unorganized to say the least.  I plan to write the thoughts for this “book” as they come to me.  Kind of using this blog as a way to put thoughts down and at the same time, how we did a lot of what we did to get Headway Themes going from day one.

How we used blogging and social media to do what I have been telling you to do for your own business for the last few years here on Blog For Profit.

I am going to give you the low points and the high points of how Clay and I, “Launched an international business from our basement in a town of 4,000 people with one tweet.”

And don’t be surprised if I don’t throw in a post or two about my dad.  The best man I ever knew.

Interesting, as I am writing this response to your post, there is quite a bit in common with my own situation. While have not built a site like this, father & son. I have built a few sites out...and I spend a lot of time on a specific Non Profit site because it gives back to our military family's (children). Operation Hug-A-Hero (www.operationhugahero.org) Guess I feel kind of guilty myself having been deployed overseas for the better part of the last (2) years and missing a lot of time with mine. My key site about video production has been dormant for quite a while as has my wife's real estate site for obvious and not so obvious reasons. Most of time this last year has been spent in support of Operations here in Iraq. I head home in a few weeks to an un certain job market, to my loving family and with a lot of info in my head....an outline has begun to form for a book as well. Following sites like yours for inspiration these long months as helped me through the long stretch away from friends and family. Now to kick my arse back in to gear and get my sites updated and put together some compelling content. Seems the only Guaranteed job is one I create going forward. Thanks for sharing, and I hope to have my outline done in the next few months too.

SSMstrategist First of all, thank you for your service. And I am honored you have been following my site and do get inspiration from it.

You are spot on when you say the "only guaranteed job is one I create..." I have never been one who wants to rely on someone else for my living.

Do keep in touch and let us know if we can ever do anything for you.

I would really love to hear this success story. Not that I am involved in any way but like you said, Headway has a great community of users. And I am proud to be part of it.

Sorry to hear about your Father.

I've had the great pleasure of meeting you and Clay a couple of times, and I really look forward to hearing more of your story of working and building a business together.

JimConnolly And I blame you for putting the idea in my head too. I am looking forward to putting it all down too. It is fun to look back over the last 3 years.
