Stop Watching Your Blog’s Stats and Do Something Really Important

9AF5DCA4-F9F5-44C7-9044-1D30F0D270E2.jpgIt is no secret, I have often said that most bloggers, especially new bloggers, spend too much time worrying about the numbers and stats on their blogs. Please understand, I know why you want to watch them. You love seeing your rankings move up and you like to see the traffic numbers increase too. But the numbers aren’t what’s important.

Watching the numbers are also wasting some very valuable time which you could be using to do more important activities. And these activities may just help someone else and just may actually help you grow your blog.

Problogger recently had a post called, “Ten Tips for Stats Addicts”. In the post we are given 10 great activities we all could be doing instead of having our noses glued to our computer screens watching the numbers.

  1. Stop checking your stats and stop writing for stats!
  2. Instead of checking stats, help out a fellow blogger!
  3. Interview other bloggers.
  4. Participate in discussion forums.
  5. Check in on your readers instead of your stats!
  6. Sign up for a new social network each day instead of obsessing over stats.
  7. Write a scintillating guest post.
  8. Reach out to new friends at Stumbleupon, Digg, Reddit, and Mixx.
  9. Keep a stats journal
  10. Read other blogs which help you blog, like Problogger.

You can visit Problogger to read the details explaining each of the 10. I urge you to try some of them the next time you get the urge to pull up the stats program to see what your numbers are.

Thanks for the advice, its so easy to get distracted and eventually turns into a bad habit of checking stats all day.

I'll admit I'm a bit of a stats addict. I like to see those numbers rise, though I may not always do what is necessary to get them to rise.

Tip #6 above - join a new social network each day - is that really wise? There are hundreds, if not thousands of social networks out there, and I agree new relationships can be a good thing. But don't you think that it's probably more important to further develop existing relationships inside of your current realm of social networks rather than building out an array of networks that you seldom check into because there are so many?

My resolution for 2009 as a still-beginning blogger is to seek out more blog entries like this one and join in the conversations, and to help out with my commentary as much as possible to hopefully drive further discussions that will be helpful in driving traffic to my own site as well as to those sites that I endorse.

Thanks for listening!

Thanks for joining in on the conversation and do come back often. I think the point of #6 was to actually point out that even doing that is better than spending too much time watching your numbers.

This is important. Checking stats instead of doing something proactivate to grow your enterprise is the real 'time-suck'. Remember that.
