Watch your follower to following ratio – Day 4 Twitter Tips and Hints

While it is true, there are no rules on twitter. I would however argue there are some good practices you should consider when you are on twitter. The tip for today is one of those good practices you need to adopt if you hope to have a successful twitter experience in my opinion.

Watch your follower to following ratio

This especially comes into play when I look at new followers to see if I want to follow back. I rarely if ever, will follow someone like the two tweeters you see below. And what you are seeing in these numbers is just one of the problems with the way they are using twitter.

What I see a lot of new twitter users do is start following a number, usually a large number of people on twitter. The mistake they make is they get a ratio that looks a lot like what you see above. Whether it is intentional or not, you will appear like a twitter spammer (twammer). When you first start using twitter, I would encourage you to follow a few and give them time to follow you back. Take it in baby steps for a week or two if necessary. What you will find is reaching your first 100 followers will take some time, but you will grow very fast after that. Don’t be in such a hurry to gather followers that you follow too many, hoping they follow back.

Don’t end up with a ratio like the two above. Your twitter experience will be better for it.

Leave your comments and questions on the tip for today. Let’s keep the conversation going.

I agree w following slowly, for building one's network slowly . There are a couple of reasons for doing this. The first reason is, we are on Twitter for building relationships. If you follow hundreds of people before you can build a relationship w them, then you are gaining nothing. You are not helping them, and they are not helping you. You are not getting to know each other, and not getting anything beneficial from your relationships and network. It takes time to develop relationships! So build them slowly and make them strong. It's not always about numbers. Or if you're numbers are going to be large, make sure they grow slowly -- so you get to know your followers WELL.

The second reason you want to watch your follower to following ratio is that if you don't, you may be mistaken for a spammer or scammer. Others won't follow you. You may even be suspended from Twitter. You may be thrown off of Twitter. Watch that you follow a ratio on Twitter that indicates that you have common sense.

Another thing I check for, in addition to the ratio you mention, is whether or not their updates are protected. I get several people following me but when I go to check them out, their updates are secured.

That's an automatic no-no in my book. If they want to follow my tweets, fine, but they won't be getting a follow back if I have to ask permission to follow them.

I really agree with this point! I also check every one that follows me. That is one of the reasons that Tweepme really threw me out of whack.

This is an excellent point. I always visit people when I get the so and so " is now following you" email. I check who they are, where they are, and what they are all about.

I get a large number of followers everyday. I still check them out before I follow back. Thanks for your comment and especially for being one of our readers.
