Hashtags are also great to know how people feel about a given subject -- they kind of signify the pulse of a given topic. Hashtags are very important. They help you to know what is going on in the twitter community --what is going on in the community and what topics the community is talking about, and how they feel about a particular topic. Hashtags also will keep you informed about a particular event. I think that was their original intent!
