How To Decide Who To Follow On Twitter –– Day 15 of Twitter Tips and Hints

followmeornot.jpgIf there is one question I get and I know others get about twitter it is, “How do I decide who to follow on twitter?” For me, I usually look at a few key points on the person that I am looking at and trying to decide whether to follow them back or not.

To Follow or Not to Follow

This is a pretty simple list and that is all it is. Just a list questions I ask when I am looking at someone. If you take these questions and apply them to the next possible person you want to follow, you might decide differently.

  • Do they have a link to a real web site or blog?
  • Does their blog or web site look interesting?
  • When you review their most recent tweets, do they look like a person who is into communication on twitter?
  • Do they just post tweets that are self-marketing and self-promotion?
  • Do they post links and ask you to click their junk?
  • Do they have their own avatar or are they using the default avatar?
  • Do they have just a few updates and those are old?
  • Do they post new tweets more then just a few times a day?
  • Do they have a high number of people they are following compared to the number following them?

I know there are a number of items that I look at when I decide whether to follow someone or not. And for full disclosure, I don’t always follow these to the letter. There are times I may follow someone who is questionable when you compare them to this list. However, it is just a list and not a set in stone list of rules. You need to use your own judgment when you are deciding whether to follow someone on twitter or not.

Do you have your own list of criteria you look at to decide if you are going to follow someone or not? If you do, make sure to add to this list by commenting here. Let’s keep the conversation going.

  • Excellent list of questions to consider when deciding whom to follow. This list is fairly similar to what I consider.

I don't hold it against someone if she or he has days of only tweeting a few times. I do think someone needs to be consistent, but I know there are days when a hectic or away schedule keeps me off Twitter.

One turnoff (when glancing at someone's tweets to decide whether to follow): foul language. That rules a person out, in my book.

    Good post!
