Give a good profile and provide a URL – Day 6 Twitter Tips and Hints

Building your community is one of the great things about twitter. And, quite frankly it is also what makes twitter such a great business developing tool. However, there are ways you can kill your ability to build your community on twitter from the very first day you start using it.

All too often I seen newbies on twitter fail to do two very key things when they set up their accounts. And what is worse, they continue to fail to do this even after they have been using twitter for a while. What is also troubling is when some say twitter is a waste of time and they are not getting any good followers. And they wonder why. The reason why is this.

You have to give us a twitter profile to read and a URL to visit to learn more about you

Just as important as not using the default avatar is taking advantage of the opportunity to give your possible followers a chance to learn more about you. You can do this by taking the 160 characters twitter makes available to you to give a profile. Not a lot of space, but it is enough.

The next thing you have to do is provide a URL in the space provided where your possible followers can do to to also learn more about you. Here is the URL I use. The URL I use is something I set up just for those who visit my twitter profile page. I will talk more about the “twitter landing page” in the next few days.

As I mentioned in the tweet I pasted above, if you don’t provide a profile and an URL in your twitter profile page, how is anyone suppose to know whether to follow you or not. Yes, there are a lot of those using twitter who auto-follow everyone back who follows them. I and a lot of others don’t do it this way. I still check out everyone who follows me to see if I want to follow them back. Does this take time, yes and I continue to do it today even though I have just over 4,000 followers.

Don’t overlook this one easy step you can take which will actually help you grow your follower numbers more than you think.

  • Grant,

Given that Twitter is searchable on Google, how important are keywords in the bio section?

  • MIght be important, but with only 160 characters to do your bio, is there really room to worry too much about them. In addition, IMHO one should be more worried about writing your bio to the people checking you out than to Google or the other search engines.
  • Filling out a profile and leaving a URL is very important. It is how I decide who I will follow. Sometimes I'll use a person's tweets, but often I'll just use their bio and URL. Another reason the bio is very important is it is often used in directories, and likeminded people are finding you through your bio. If you have no bio or a very silly one w/o good keywords, you won't have others finding you. Take your bio seriously and change it when necessary as the situation warrants, is my advice.
