Don’t Worry About Unfollows –– Day 21 of Twitter Tips and Hints

SadFace.jpg 485×460 pixels.jpgIt has happened to all of us. We post some good tweets, at least we think they are. Or we send some good links to twitter. And what happens, we get a few unfollows. Even worse, you use one of those stupid twitter tools to see who has unfollowed you and it gives you the post they left on. Dumb idea by the way.

The problem is too many people on twitter are way to concerned by the numbers and their follower numbers to be specific.

Don’t pay attention to unfollows

I don’t even know when someone unfollows me and I don’t keep track. To be honest, I don’t give a care. There are many reasons people unfollow or don’t follow you at all. The thing to remember is this. Focus on being you and providing value to your followers and the right people will stay with you.

Don’t be so hung up on your follower numbers that you miss the biggest advantage and benefit of twitter. Twitter gives you the chance to build a community of like minded people. It also gives you the chance to listen in on conversations between some of the big influencers in your niche. So, who cares if someone unfollows you? You shouldn’t.

  • Nice post. Very true, "Be yourself, try to keep up the good tweets and don't bother about unfollows."
  • As usual, you are right on track. I figured this one out intuitively. When first starting out on twitter, I tried just about every tool I could find, including the one that tells you when people unfollow, and after which post.

I'm not even convinced the information provided by that tool is accurate. I think it might be a scam, sort of like the first year of the Celiac Christmas Lights, where you clicked some buttons and it looked like you were controlling inflatable Christmas decorations, but it was in fact only a series of images, not a live webcam. The Christmas Lights are now the real deal & you CAN control stuff through the web, but even if the unfollow tools start giving accurate unfollow information, I'm not sure how useful it would be.

I decided to heck with them. If I cannot be myself, there's no point in doing this. The people I resonate with will stay and the ones that I offend will leave. And that is as it should be.

  • And that is all that matters. The people you "resonate" with are the ones you want to follow and have follow you. The others done matter at all.
