Pay Attention to Your Blog Post Titles

Toolbelt.jpgFor today’s assignment in our ongoing series, 28 Days to Build a Successful Blog I want you to step back for a moment and take a look at the post titles you have been writing.

The titles you use for each and every blog post are essentially the “headlines” of your post. This is the first thing people read when they either arrive to your blog or get your RSS feed. According to the great blog Copyblogger,

On average, 8 out of 10 people will read headline copy, but only 2 out of 10 will read the rest. This is the secret to the power of the headline, and why it so highly determines the effectiveness of the entire piece.

If your post title does not catch the eye of your visitors and readers, they are not going to read your blog’s post no matter how great it is.

In a recent post I just read, “write good headlines to increase traffic and get results” we are given 3 key points to consider when writing our blog post titles.

  1. Give your titles a clear name. Nouns work better then verbs. Clear descriptions work better than cute puns.
  2. Make sure the titles accurately describes the content.
  3. Get real. “Don’t sugar coat your message with anything that is fake or dishonest.”

Take these tips and double check your post titles. Don’t have your visitors or readers leave your blog before they actually read your post.

I spent a long time using pithy puns for headlines, but finally learned that technique just does not work. The headline has to be clear.

-Love your blog btw.

Grant,

Thanks for the reminder. When I look at my own behavior, I realize that I when I'm skimming through Google reader or friendfeed, I look at titles only - then drill down if they grab me.

The other thing about titles that Ria Sharon taught me is to always include "How to" in the title. Now, she was half-kidding about this, but think about it: When folks need an answer to an urgent question, they go to Google and type in something like, "How to unclog and overflowing toilet".
